Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme

Our school received an Irish flag and a copy of the 1916 Proclamation from the Defence Forces on Monday, 28th September 2015. We invited parents and members of our community to join us for this event.

All gathered in Ms. Butler’s room to await the arrival of the Defence Forces team at the school. Ms. Moore-Walsh introduced Darragh and Chloe from Sarsfield Barracks in Limerick to the crowd and Fainne Geal an Lae accompanied the visitors as they entered the room.

Darragh Lavelle spoke about the 1916 Rising and the Irish tricolour. He questioned the students about this important event in Irish history and about the history of the Irish flag. Following this, his colleague Chloe, read the Proclamation with the help of fifth class student Jonah Ryan who ably read an extract from the proclamation.

Darragh then invited questions from those gathered in the room and explained how we should care for our National Flag. The flag was then presented to Rhona Lyons in 5th Class who accepted it on behalf of the school.

The event culminated with the national anthem and a photograph with the Defence Forces. (See Gallery).

We will raise the National Flag in a special ceremony to be held on 15th March 2016. At this ceremony, the 1916 proclamation and the school proclamation will also be read.
