Maths Week Ireland 10/10/15 – 18/10/15

Maths Week takes place this year from the 10th October 2015 to 18th October 2015.  During Maths Week we take a closer look at math and try to show the children how math is in everything that we do from the moment we get up to the moment we go to sleep e.g. shopping, going on a journey, setting the alarm clock etc. We also try to show the children that math can be great fun and so have planned a number of activities during the week to help the children to engage more with math including Math games and Math trails.

Parent(s) / Guardian(s) can also help by using math in everyday activities. How about asking the children to calculate how much two items cost in the shop? When going on a journey, children could calculate the distance? What shapes can be seen in your home? There are many examples of math in our everyday life.

To get our school community thinking mathematically we are sending home a book of math puzzles for both junior and senior students and their parents. There is one puzzle to be solved each night. We hope that parents and students will have a great time working out these puzzles together. Both booklets will be published on this website in the Kids’ Corner under ‘Fun Links‘. If you feel that your child would benefit more from either the Junior or Senior Booklet, please feel free to download them and enter. Alternatively, please request a copy from the office.

So what do you have to do?

  1. Each night try to solve the math brainteaser.
  2. On Monday, 19th October 2015, return the puzzle book or answer sheets to the school.
  3. Each child who gets all 5 questions right will be entered into a draw for a prize. The draw will take place on 23rd October 2015 at 11a.m. and the winners from each classroom will be announced by text .
